Ever since my leg healed I'd been wanting to explore my new surroundings. I must say, Spectra does have something to offer Earth in the way of medical technology -- I don't know how they do it, but my injuries had healed in just over a month, remarkable even taking the length of Spectra's months into consideration. I've been allowed to roam about the complex as part of my physiotherapy: Anywhere that's protected by Spiridium is my allotted territory, provided I'm accompanied by an escort. Because of the situation that brought me here in the first place, all of my guards and escorts are from the women's legions. Unauthorized men are to be shot on sight, and the only authorized man is Zoltar himself.

While the complex is interesting, what with its cafeterias, gaming parlours, recreation lounges and workstations, I wanted to learn more about Spectran life in general. Today, I got my chance.

As Zoltar put it, his pants got interesting. That seems to be a translation for a Spectran phrase that means things got very chaotic.
I don't know what this has to do with pants, however... The landlord of one of the barracks went a little crazy and threw everyone out.
Most were able to find places to crash for a bit, but two of Zoltar's more trusted aides ended up with no where to go, so Zoltar took them in, claiming that the mansion of the Planetary Ruler was more than large enough.

This was true; however with all of the lawsuits, evictions, harrassment and seeking of new lodgings, Zoltar hasn't been able to do any housework. This surprised me, as I'm used to political figures hiring maid services to do these things, but apparently this is not the case on Spectra -- or, its not the case while Zoltar's in power.

Now I love housework. It was working as a maid that I built up the capital to buy my restaurant. What cooking is to Tiny, housework is to me, so naturally I volunteered to help. This got me a funny look.

"The place is a disaster!" Zoltar protested after regarding me for a couple of seconds.

"So?" I replied, "More of a challenge. It'll keep me busy and out of mischief."

This got me a bark of laughter, "I'm not so sure of that, Dove," he said pointedly, "While I like you very much, I know quite well what your job is, and I know very well that one day you're going to try to do it."

"And you, of course, will have to try to stop me" / "而且你,當然,將必須試著阻止我"

"Quite so."

I smiled, "So assign someone to watch over me, make sure I don't get into anything I'm not supposed to. I just want to help out. I like doing housework and I'm bored, even with that marvellous contraption you call a computer" / 我微笑,"如此分配某人看守我, 確定我不進入任何事 , 我不被推想到。

He leans back and looks at me down his nose for a long time. Finally he shrugs and accedes. He calls for an escort and soon I was on my way to Taigh Iarainn.

* * * / ***

It's a lot smaller than I had expected. On Earth, people's houses usually reflect their status, with those of political figures being very large, and those of heads of state being monstrous. Taigh Iarainn isn't much larger than the estate homes in the prosperous sectors of most cities. He was right, though -- it was a disaster! Nalia, my guard, explained to me that Zoltar isn't given much to housework to begin with, focussing his energies on cooking. Thus, he only runs the dishwasher when there's nothing left to cook with! Shades of Tiny, I thought, looking around. However, I could see why this was a worse situation than the usual. From the marks in the carpeting, there had been quite a lot of heavy boxes and crates, the mattresses and bedding on the floors of the spare bedrooms, the blood marks on the wall (Nalia explained there had been a fight at the landlord's office), all indicating the chaotic state of the past week.

Quite simply, it hadn't been cleaned because you couldn't practically clean around it all.

I began by picking up the papers scattered around the floors and tables. Nalia helped me identify newpapers and magazines, so I could separate them from important-looking stuff, but I adamantly refused to let her put the papers in the garbage. This is because someone might be saving an article or section, and would be upset if it were thrown out. So I separated them into two piles, and left them for Zoltar to peruse later.

While engaged in this, I asked Nalia why they bother with paper products when they have those multi-purpose wonderunits they pass off as computers?

"No matter what kind of screen we create, they're still hard on the eyes after a while. We use paper for a change and because many people still prefer it. We still like to curl up in front of the fire with a good book, and many novelists and artists still prefer to practice on paper, even if they do the final draft on computer" / "無論我們創造什麼類型的螢幕,他們仍然在一會兒之後在眼睛上很難。

The papers picked up, the rooms already start to look neater. Nalia helped me put the food wrappers and other obvious waste into garbage containers that would be sent to a recycling plant. The Spectrans are much more into recycling than Earth is, and I was amazed at the composting bin Nalia showed me when we picked up the food wastes.

They're run by a combination of grubs and bacteria, and are capable of processing nearly everything, without odour. Even meat products can be composted by this set up. The compost is turned out after about a month, and is richly nutritious. Nalia pointed out the green house out back, where Zoltar keeps quite a number of plants for various purposes.
The gardener would be by later on -- perhaps I'll ask for a tour. /

Spectran vaccuum cleaners aren't much different from our own, also being electric. What is different is where the electricity comes from. / Spectran vaccuum
It seems that each community produces part of its own power requirements, being supplemented by purchased power. Since the wind here on Spectra is unbelievable (I don't think there's such thing as a gentle breeze here), windmills are the most common energy-generating device. I'm told this is a by-product of Spectra's depreciation.

The utility bill of a Spectran includes maintenance of the windmills and generators, supplementary power, water, and heat. Water is expensive, since the planet's depreciation means that its water supply is deteriorating. Water purification and recycling plants are a source of business for the planet, and again, I think they could teach us a few things, since the tap water around here is a lot better tasting than anything I've had on Earth! Nalia won't tell me how many times it's been recycled.. now that I think about it, I don't want to know!

Clearing out the stove was next on the list of things to do, after I'd finished the vaccuuming. Like electricity, heat is purchased to supplement that produced in the home. Spectra is blessed with several varieties of tree that grow very quickly and give a high yeild, so firewood is much less expensive and more plentiful here than it is on / 出自火爐的清掃是做的在事物的目錄上的下一個,在我有完成了 vaccuuming 之後。
Earth. Most homes have at least one fireplace or woodburning stove. /
Some use a woodburning cookstove to do both the cooking and heating of the home. I find that remarkable, because such stoves are considered primitive by Earth standards -- why use such an inefficient stove when you can have electric or gas-powered stoves?

"Who says they're inefficient?" Nalia asked when I questioned her about it, "I find it just as easy, easier sometimes because I can change the heat instantly without having to wait for a burner to cool down."

"But don't you have to have precise heat to bake cakes and things?" I asked / " 但是你不必須有精確的熱烘焙蛋糕和事物嗎 "? 我問

She laughed and shook her head, "No, all you need is common sense." /

I remain skeptical about this, but since I'm not a good cook, I can't really comment. /

It's certainly true, however, that with such a renewable source for firewood, woodburning is more practical to the Spectran than natural gas. After we scraped the ashes out of the potbellied stove, we took them outside and put them in the barbeque pit. Yes, this firewood burns into charcoal, which is then reburnt for barbeque! If there are too many ashes, they are sent to a processing plant that refines the mineral salts from them for industrial use, including soaps.

Dishes were the next item on my agenda. Loading the dishes (the uses of which I was to learn later) into the dishwasher was not very different from home, but when it came to putting the detergent into the cups I couldn't find either! Nalia looked at me in amazement when I asked her where they were. Then she explained how dishwashers and laundry machines work.

They're sonic! They don't use detergents, they use sound waves to agitate the water and pound out the grime. The used water then drains out through the bottom of the machine into its storage tank, passing through a filter that traps all of the food particles. The filter is removed and put into the composter, and the water is clean, ready to be re-used for the next cycle.

I didn't do any laundry, Zoltar left explicit instructions about that.
However, Nalia explained that washing machines work on much the same principle. When I asked about bleaching, she took me up to a living room and showed me a couple of trays filled with a murky, whitish liquid.

Spectran bleaches work on the same principle as Earth bleach: They break apart the water molecule, forming hydrochloric acid and free oxygen, the oxygen doing the actual bleaching. The hydrochloric acid, even though in a weak solution, is the reason why bleaching is so hard on clothes. However, whereas we add the bleach directly to the wash water, Spectran machines have a separate cycle. The bleach is poured into a separate compartment, where the wash water is added and the reaction takes place. The oxygen/HCl solution is then added to the laundry compartment and allowed to work. When the bleach cycle is completed, the bleach solution drains into another compartment, which is kept stocked with lye -- sodium hydroxide. The lye reacts with the hydrochloric acid and neutralizes it, producing hydrogen hydroxide and sodium chloride -- salt water. The tray in the neutralizing compartment is then removed and set in the sunshine, where the water evaporates off, humidifying the house and leaving behind the salt for household use. It seemed to me that if the planet were so hard up for water, letting it evaporate would be wasteful. However, as Nalia pointed out to me, they aren't the only beings on the planet; the rain has to come from somewhere.

It seems like a lot of work, but apparently its very cost effective. /
Industrial launderers (the ones who service hotels and barracks and suchlike) are also the planet's salt manufacturers, producing salt for street maintenance and public consumption (like pickling or restaurants). The costs taken up on Earth by detergents, and fabric softeners are unknown here, being taken up by the cost of lye and additional power requirements. It all balances out, but it works so well it's astounding. / 工業的 launderers( 一些誰維修旅館和兵舍和 suchlike) 也是行星的含鹽製造業者 , 生產街道維護和公共宣傳的鹽。

The gardener showed up just as I was about to get down to scrubbing floors, walls and bathrooms. It took me a while to recognise him, but eventually I placed him as the third soldier in the command room when I was taping Zoltar's voice. So he's Zoltar's gardener.. 。

Household cleansing products...NOT what I expected. I'm used to things like Comet-with-Chlorinol, liquid cleansers, Mr. Clean and so forth.
I was surprised to find that the abrasive cleanser is baking soda, and the liquid cleansers are ammonia and a concentrated vinegar! I think I may have to switch to these when I get home, because I was very impressed by their effectiveness, especially the baking soda for washing walls. Nalia told me how to make a solution of baking soda in water and it cut through the fingerprints on the walls like nothing / 我感到驚訝發現,磨平的使清潔的東西是碳酸氫鈉,而且液體的使清潔的東西是氨和集中的醋!
I've ever known! And here I've been scrubbing my arms off with / 我曾經已經知道!
Fantastik... / Fantastik。。。

Soap scum in the bathtub (what a bathtub!!) came off very easily, with a lot less elbow grease than I'm used to. All this and it raises cakes too....

Cleaning the burners of the stove (Taigh Iarainn has an electric stove, which the gardener assured me isn't Zoltar's personal favorite) showed me another lesson. Some of the spills were burnt on and would be very difficult to remove. I prepared to go at it, when Nalia stopped me and pulled out the burner. Reaching over to the switchboard, she turned off the power to that outlet, then poured baking soda into the burner.
Then she poured in the concentrated vinegar and WHOO-HOO!!! An explosion of foam! It boiled over onto the top of the stove, seething and foaming and smelling awful. I watched aghast as a real mess was made. Finally, it stopped.

It all came off. Of course! The ferocious action of the baking soda and vinegar neutralizing each other scoured up all of the burned-on material, meaning I just had to wipe it away. Now *this* is "scrubbing bubbles"! Definately something to keep in mind the next time I burn something to the bottom of the pot... 。。

We used the vinegar to clean the windows and the tables, diluting it for the latter, since they're delicate. To protect the wood, we used an oil/wax concoction that was scented deliciously with a citrusy, woodsy smell. I was told that the scent was got from the leaves of a shrub, which grew around the area. A homemade furniture polish, apparently. It worked beautifully, and I couldn't detect any signs of build-up.

We unloaded the dishes from the dishwasher and prepared another load. /
Here, apparently, was where Zoltar got the most upset with previous housekeepers: They kept rearranging his kitchen. As a non-cook, I can understand why -- why keep the spices way over there, when they'd be handier in the cupboard over the stove? Why keep the cooking baking soda in the cupboard with the plates when it belongs with the other baking needs? But the years of dealing with Tiny have taught me about a cook's kitchen.

Heat and light destroy spices, rendering them flavourless. So a cook stores them in the coolest, darkest cupboard in the kitchen, even though it may be somewhat inconvenient. Baking soda is used to smother kitchen fires which can leap quite high, so keeping it above the stove is dangerous. It has to be kept convenient to the stove, but not directly near it, so that it can be grabbed quickly and safely. The cupboard best suited for this contains plates, so hence its location.

Just *why* a cook chooses to put glasses in one cupboard, dishes in another, storage containers in that one, is a mystery to all but the cook. The sure fire way to make an enemy of the cook, though, is to rearrange things. They put it that way for a reason, whatever that reason may be, and they DON'T like to go searching for things, particularly when the sauce is about to burn. So the only rearranging I did to Zoltar's cupboards was to restack things neatly, nesting them and placing them in a graduating order. On the same shelves. In the same cupboards.

The same with the refrigerator and freezer. Yep, they have those on / 和電冰箱和冰庫的一樣。
Spectra too, little different from our own. Those differences they had, neither Nalia nor the gardener (whose name, I learned, was "Adric" or something like that.. it was kind of gargly) had English words for, so I can't say what they are. They're very efficient, though, a little more conservative in power consumption.

Finally, I was finished. Zoltar would have to take care of his own laundry and bedroom, but the rest of Taigh Iarainn was clean. Adric (or whatever his name was) showed me the greenhouse. Growing there were vegetables, herbs (both medicinal and culinary), and many plants that Adric said Zoltar used in his hobbies. Apparently he's into natural textiles, and Adric showed me the plants used to make cloth, dye it and preserve it. Since many of the preserving plants had lovely aromas, they were used as potpourris to cover the smell of spiridium in / 最後,我被完成。 Adric(或任何的他名字是) 給我看溫室。
Zoltar's private rooms. / Zoltar's

I hadn't noticed any spiridium in any of the rooms I had cleaned, so I had used the thought-controlling techniques I was taught, concentrating on my work and my wonder at the Spectran household. If I subtracted those rooms from the number of rooms I was told were in the house, that means Zoltar has only two rooms and a vanity in which he doesn't have to be masked. He has to be masked even in the kitchen. I wonder if I could live under such circumstances?

I had noticed a couple of strange looking sticks while picking up the main living room, the purpose of which Nalia hadn't known. Adric explained that they were spindles for spinning yarn.

They were very simple, not what I had expected, growing up on tales of / 他們非常簡單, 不我已經期望的, 增加在故事上上面
Sleeping Beauty. All they were, was a stick with a hook in one end and a point on the other, onto which was fixed a disk. The disk was at the hook end on some spindles, at the pointed end on others. Adric explained their use, saying that the ones with the disk at the pointed end were to be "dropped" while spinning, and spun with the fingers, while the ones with the disk at the top were flung off the thigh. I couldn't imagine either forming yarn, so he took me downstairs to the basement.

Whoa!!! There were all kinds of contraptions down there! Adric showed me the big floor loom with treadles and lots of "harnesses", strung with a fine, fine thread being made into a fine cloth; a smaller loom on a table that Adric said was Zoltar's hobby loom (meaning it was portable); a large vertical loom on which some sort of tapestry was being woven (I didn't know you could weave pictures!), and several kinds of spinning wheels. There were also vats for dyeing, and baskets containing different kinds of fleeces and fibres. A strange looking stick had a great cone of what looked like hair, bound to it with a ribbon, and balls of yarn lay around the room in various stages of completion.

Here, Adric picked up some fibre that looked a little like wool (but he said it was vegetable in origion), teased it with a comb, then picked up one of the "drop" spindles. He rolled a bit of the fibre against his leg, forming what he called a "leader", which he tied onto the spindle. Then, he gave the spindle a twist with his fingers, and let it drop, drawing the fibre down with it, its spinning twisting it into yarn. When it had reached the floor, Adric wound the yarn onto the shaft, and held up a bit. I tugged on it, and it was very strong, not giving at all.

He did the same thing with one of the thigh spindles. Wow! He just rolled it off his thigh out into midair, spinning madly and taking the fleece with it! He formed a much longer piece of yarn in a much shorter time with this kind of spindle. That's as far as he's gotten though. He hasn't figured out how to get a good yarn on the spinning wheel yet.

The alarm on the computer rang. It was Zoltar, asking us to take.. 。
something... out of the freezer for dinner. Adric bragged to him about what a good job I'd done on the house, and how pleased he would be. Zoltar told him what time he should be arriving back, and Adric broke the connection. 。。

"Hey, look at the time! 'Saitchu Ya Amacrutzaku' is on!" Adric exclaimed, then keyed for the television program to run.

These Spectran computers are marvellous. They're everything in one.
They function as the television, and calling them up is similar to calling up a communication program. Essentially, thats what it is, since the Spectran modem is equipped to handle satellite transmissions, radio waves and short waves in addition to data pulses. BBSing, file transfers, phone calls and television are all handled by the modem, using the same principles. Taping a tv show is essentially the same as capturing a BBS conversation, as is taking phone messages: They're all stored either to the hard disk, or to floppy or flic film (also known as "sheet disks").

'Saitchu Ya Amacrutzaku' translates out as "Security Cameras Tonight". / 'Saitchu Ya Amacrutzaku'
Some enterprising entertainment producer realised the potential for humour in the military's security cameras, which are ever present and ever functional in every Spectran base, local or interplanetary. It's a bit like those home video shows. I didn't understand the language, but for the most part, I didn't have to.

Evidently the Spectrans have pirated a few Earth tv shows from oldies stations. Old Britcoms seem to have gained the popularity, and many of the clips were of soldiers and officers imitating favorite parts. One however, had me on the floor.

The scene was of a minor control room, where two soldiers were bent over their consoles. This, according to Nalia, was a surveilance room, where much of this sort of material comes from. There were two entrances to the room, separated by a wall with shelves. The room was quiet, and gradually a sound became audible, then louder, as though it were coming closer. It went "AAAAAAAOOOOOOOWWWWWAAAAAAOOOOOOOWWW..." 。。"

Then Zoltar glided in through the left entranceway, rotated past the shelves and spiralled out the other door. The two soldiers looked from him to each other, then cracked up.

I was on the floor! I've always wondered how the Cat did that rotating glide, but whatever knack it took, Zoltar had it! Evidently he's gotten into "Red Dwarf", because the clip was followed by another clip of speeches in a lecture hall. The captain currently speaking (what a getup!) was going on about the most inane and obvious things.
Finally, Zoltar stood up, tapped him on the shoulder, and quoted / 最後, Zoltar 站起來,在肩上輕打他, 而且引述
Kryten's speech to the Cat about brains larger than a grape. It was entirely appropriate.

We sat and watched the show, laughing our heads off, Nalia and Adric translating wherever they could.

"They do all-Zoltar, all-Mala, all-Zarabeth and all-officers programs, too," Adric informed me, "They're as popular as the tv-bloopers specials" / "他們做全部-Zoltar,所有的-Mala,所有的-Zarabeth 和所有- 官員計畫,也,"Adric 告知了我," 他們是像 tv 一樣的受歡迎- 引起雜音的收音機特別的"

"I can imagine!" I said, wondering if anyone on Earth has ever thought of using security cameras this way. Probably not, though, the governments would blow a spaz... 。。

I didn't recognise one of the names Adric had mentioned, so I asked him about it.

"Zarabeth? Oh, she's Zoltar's other sister. There's Zoltar, and then there're the twins, Mala and Zarabeth. Zarabeth's hardly ever seen though. She's a lot shyer than her siblings. She's mostly assigned to reconnaissance and intelligence, which in her case is NOT an oxymoron." / "Zarabeth? 有 Zoltar, 然後 there're 雙胞胎, Mala 和 Zarabeth。

Adric went on to show me how Spectran BBSes work. They're very different from Earth BBSes, being audio/visual! It's like a multi-line videophone conference, and you can choose whether you want to be seen or not. A few people were unseen, including one name I knew -- / Adric
Mandragora!

Adric translated a bit of what was being spoken, but I was in shock -I could understand part of it! I was racking my brain trying to solve the puzzle. Why was I getting the gist of this conversation, when it was being held in an alien tongue? The words and phrasing were definately familiar though.

Come to think of it, a couple of the languages, including the one that seemed to be native to Zoltar and Adric, were familiar to me. Why was this so? Even the name of this house, Taigh Iarainn, I felt I should know. I put the problem aside for later consideration.

Upon his arrival home, Zoltar ducked through the halls towards his private rooms. His mask had gotten ripped somewhere, but I blocked the image of the lock of blonde hair from my mind, lest the Spirit know that I had seen something. Changed and safe, he made his way towards the main room, staring around him. Then he prowled into the kitchen, inspecting all of the cupboards, peering about, certain to find something out of place. Nothing. His eyes took in the neatly separated piles of paper, and he idly picked up a few, noting their contents, then nodding to himself.

"Do I pass?" I asked, coming over to stand beside him. He straightened up and looked at me.

Then, he placed his hands on my shoulders, leaned forward, and kissed me on the cheek, "Thank you," he said softly. I blushed and looked at my feet.

"WELL," I said, not knowing what to do, "I guess it's getting late.. / " 。
Should get back to the complex.." I looked at Nalia and Adric for support.

"No, you stay" Zoltar said. I looked back to him. "You clean my house, put yourself out like that, put your injuries at risk, and you expect to leave without taking a meal with me??" He feigned offence at such a notion. Adric and Nalia laughed. He spun around and bustled into the kitchen, muttering all the while about "these Earth people, no manners at all". I smiled, then went back to the main room to see what other wonders Adric had to show me.

Tiny, would that you could be here now. Zoltar is a fabulous cook!
Tiny would also have a fun time exploring Spectran eating customs.

Actually, I'm mistaken. The customs Zoltar follows are those of Lower / 實際上,我被誤認。
Feileidh, rather than all of Spectra. Spectra, like Earth, has many diverse cultures. / Feileidh,

Lower Feileidh tables are just a little lower than Western tables, and the dining chairs are very different. They look a little like those "knee chairs", having angled seats and a padded platform against which to kneel. This forces an upright posture, strengthening the back, but there is a back rest to lean against when you're finished eating.

The meal consisted of several varieties of vegetables, grains, pulses and dairy relishes, with a smallish serving of meat. Overall, Spectran diets focus on the first three, with meat and dairy being served in smaller portions, considered supplementary rather than staple. This is how Spectra manages to feed its population, which is only slightly less than that of Earth, having boomed exponentially since the Spirit's takeover. Dairy products are expensive, because Spectra has no landbeasts that produce palatable milk. The Spectran dairy beasts are marine, and because their migration is necessary to their health and the flavour of the milk, they're very hard to farm.
Zoltar served us were considered to be delicacies and we were very honoured to sample them.

The meal came ready served on a platter that resembled an Indian "thali" set. Several small bowls contained the goopier dishes, while the platter itself held the bowls and dry dishes, like the starches.
The meal was eaten with split-tipped eating knives. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but I refused to allow Zoltar to get me a / 一餐與劈開一起吃-提示吃的刀子。
Western-style fork. The wetter dishes were eaten with a shallow spoon, contained in the handle of the knife. /

There was wine with the meal, a robust tasting black wine that looked formidable and smelled glorious. I was told that during formal banquets (which I may later see, depending on how long I'm here), several kinds of wine come with the meal, to be drunk according to course. They come served in very small portions, however: Drunkenness is frowned upon on Spectra. During the main meal itself, it is common to alternate the black wine with the green. Zoltar later showed me a bottle of the green -- I thought the glass of the bottle was green! It was the wine! Several liqueurs and spirits are made from the wines, as well as from grains and fruits. It surprised me to discover that these / 有有一餐的葡萄酒,強健的嚐看起來強大,而且聞起來光榮的黑色葡萄酒。
Spectran wines were made from the pods of certain legumes, not from fruit at all! / Spectran

There is no dessert, as we know it, to the Lower Feileidh meal. The diner is expected to eat their fill of the dinner, then the sweet is served a few hours after, with ti. Ti is like tea in that it is brewed leaves, but the flavour is very different, being sharper, muskier or fruitier, depending on how the ti was processed. It can also be flavoured with additives such as fruit rinds, or the fermented pods of the wine legume, which lends a delicious winy flavour to the ti. This ti was actually a tisane, or herbal tea. As in English, the word "ti" can apply both to tisanes and to true ti.

The equivalent to Earth coffee is "tchekna" or Tiagnadh, as its spelled in Lower Feileidh. Its the brew drawn from the root of a tree, very, very strong to my sense. I can't have it though, because of a compound in it my digestive system isn't equipped for. I was also denied one of the relishes Zoltar had made, because the herb it was seasoned with contains an arsenide. To the Spectrans, deliciously bitter: To me, deadly!

While we waited for dinner to digest, Zoltar took us again to the basement, where he demonstrated the use of his looms. He let me try a few passes on the table loom; its harder to do than I thought! He described the process of "warping" the looms (putting the threads on) while removing his gloves. The process sounds time consuming and back-breaking. It sure makes me appreciate ready-made clothing!

The long gloves off, Zoltar sat down beside one of the spinning wheels, taking up the funny looking stick with the hair tied to it. It was a "distaff", at least he thinks that's what its called in English. He beckoned me to sit beside him, then explained the hair to me. It's the hair of a mountain animal, very expensive and hard to find. He picked up another distaff, bound with similar looking stuff. This, he explained, came from Earth, and was vegetable in origion. The plant it came from was called "flax" and the yarn made from it called "linen".
Those I recognise, having been given a set of Irish linen table linens by Jason. So this is where it comes from..? 。?

Tucking the distaff of Spectran fibre under his arm, Zoltar found the end of the yarn on the wheel, began to treadle it, and was soon spinning the fibre into yarn. He did not watch the work as it was being done, but talked to us, explaining the tension and wheel settings to Adric and myself, trusting his fingers to maintain the evenness of the yarn.

I have to go into a bit of detail about Zoltar's fingers. His hands are long and incredibly delicate, with long, tapering fingers like those said of pianists (in spite of the fact that the best pianists have had squat hands with stubby fingers). The hands, for all their delicacy and grace, are well-developed and the definition of the muscle is easy to trace, though not ropy or unpleasant to the eye. They were perfectly controlled as he controlled the expelling fibres with one hand, felt for irregularities with the other. The nails were longish, passing the tips of the fingers, but not as long as a woman's nails.
They caught the light at their tips, sparkling occasionally. I wondered what caused the effect. /

I wondered, too, what caused the white ropes of scar tissue at the bases of the palms. They continued down the wrists, vanishing under the long, skintight sleeves of his tunic. I'd seen scars like that before, but never on the likes of him.

Presently, I was being offered some fleece and a spindle, on which to try spinning myself. I found I have an aptitude for it, for I picked up the methods much more quickly than Adric had, and before long was trying one of the wheels. I understand Adric's puzzlement over spinning at the wheel, though -- so many adjustments! Wow! Zoltar offered me the wheel and spindle to take back to the complex with me, along with a basket of fleece and combs to comb it with. When I had enough yarn, he would show me how to set the twist permanently and colour the yarn. I asked for knitting needles, because I knew I was going to get excited over this new craft, and I'd have to do something with it.

After the sweet, Adric and Nalia left to return to their barracks. I didn't feel uncomfortable being alone with Zoltar, though that was unusual for me. We talked for a long time, sipping ti, talking about everything from spinning and weaving, to painting, to cooking, to highlights on our respective jobs. I got up to put the supper dishes in the dishwasher and he jumped up, pushing me back down onto the cushions, saying I had done enough work and this was his house anyways.
I had to laugh. /

It was close to midnight before we went out to his vehicle, to take me back to the complex. I asked about the vehicle, which he called a convertable. This didn't mean the top came down, it meant it could be a land-riding car, or a flying personal aircraft. It didn't seem to produce much exhaust, which interested me.

"At the moment, our vehicles use either hydrocarbon-burning engines, or water engines. This one's a hydrocarb engine; my other one, and Mala's are water engines" / "此刻,我們的車輛使用或燒碳化氫的引擎 , 或水引擎。

"But there's hardly any exhaust fumes. Natural gas engines always produce a fair amount of exhaust" / " 但是剛剛有任何的廢氣。

"Earth ones do, I've noticed, but it seems to be because they don't fully consume the fuel" / " 地球一些做,我已經注意,但是因為他們不完全消費燃料,它似乎是 "

"Yes, thats true. The cars are powered by the kinetic energy produced by the explosion in the combustion chamber. The gas isn't completely burned, so it produces a lot of waste."

He nodded. "Whereas our engines are run by the heat energy produced by the combustion, so the gas has to burn completely to get the most efficiency. The complete combustion of hydrocarbons produces water and heat. The heat is used by the engine, the water is exhaust."

"How do water engines work?"

"The same way, the heat energy coming from the fission of the water molecule, breaking it into hydrogen and oxygen. It has more potential problems though, because of the hydrogen."

"That could be explosive" He nodded agreement, then added "The problem we're facing is that, while the hydrocarbon engine is the more efficient and less polluting, we're running very low on hydrocarbons and can't synthesize enough. However, the water engine has its pollution problems, as well as water getting more scarce."

"Couldn't you capture the hydrogen from a water engine and use the carbon from wood ashes to synthesize more hydrocarbons?" I asked, thinking of the barbeque pit.

He nodded vigorously, "That's the idea our researchers are working on right now, a way to combine the properties of the two engines into one that could produce its own fuel. Sort of a perpetual motion machine, only the input/output ratio is equal."

"Is such a thing possible?"

"We sure hope so!"

We continued that conversation into the complex where I was being kept, discussing the possibilities and problems of such an engine. Frankly, /
I'd seen so many miracles today, I was willing to believe anything was possible. We walked down the corridors, passing into the spiridium-lined sections.

As soon as the big spiridium doors closed behind us, I asked him / 像被關閉在我們後面的大 spiridium 門一樣的很快,我問了他

"Do you really live in just two little rooms??"

He laughed "You've been waiting all day to ask that, haven't you?"
When I nodded he said, "Yes I do, and my 'bedroom window' is the same setup I put in your room" He was referring to the video wallscreen he'd had installed in my cell. It was linked into a couple of security cameras, here and around the world, chosen more for view than for security. I could view the world real-time, being able to change the scene whenever I wished. No fresh air, however.

"Our scientists are very close to perfecting their 'transparant spiridium', which will be installed as windows when it's finished.
I'll have them installed into your room. At that time, though I'll be moving into Taigh nan Ro`in, my mountain house. I'm having it uilt, completely protected by spiridium. They've figured out how to make the stuff accept paint, by the way."

"Oh, you mean I won't have to look at dull purple walls anymore?"

He grinned, "Neither of us!"

We walked in silence for a bit, then finally we turned down the corridor, at the end of which was my room. We nodded to the guards posted on either side of the corridor entrance. They reported two attempts to break the security. It had been happening ever since I was first brought here. The guards were to keep others from getting me, not to keep me from getting out.

"Any word on the other..." my voice trailed off. He was nodding slowly.

"We've got one, the chief. Your details were incriminating evidence. / "
We expect to have the names of his accomplices soon."

I felt cold and sick. I also felt relieved. It hadn't been for nothing. However, there would be a trial and I would have to testify. /
I wasn't looking forward to that. I would also likely have to identify the man positively. I wasn't looking forward to that either. We arrived at my door.

"I'll notify you immediately when we have all of them." I nodded, unspeaking.

"Princess?" I looked up. "Thanks for doing my house."

I smiled. /
